Happy Thanksgiving!

November 26, 2012

We had several great morning slaying 7-11# yellowtail. We caught one that was 20# and had one take us to the bottom. Some very nice sierra earlier in the week that went to the smoker. A lot of bonita, with some doing the same. Had to fill in today, otherwise I’d be out in the glass calm sea looking for dorado and marlin. Some were caught 20mi. out yesterday. Temps showed in the mid-70’s. Off to Cabo in a week!

The last dorado?

November 20, 2012

My cousin came into town and we started off the first morning with eight yellowtail and a bunch of sierra for the smoker. We left the next morning for Tortuga. We caught 4 12-17# bulls on the way over. The next morning we picked up a few bonita and some huge skipjack. Then we hooked a marlin on a Rapala and fought it for 45 minutes. It must have jumped 30+ times. We hiked to the crater which was pretty cool. We caught a half-dozen cabrilla, but nothing over 4.5#. Good snorkeling but a little chilly at 74 degrees. Caught four small dorado on the way back. If it wasn’t so rough I think we could have hunted down more fish. It has cooled to 70 in close. Five overcast days, so we’ll see what things look like down south with the next good satellite shot.

Cabrilla finally

November 15, 2012

I was just saying that I hadn’t caught a cabrilla all Fall and few in the Spring, and bang. We pulled in a nice 12# fish. We caught two more and a few bonita. The yellowtail were boiling good in the morning and we quickly picked up six. Today we caught one and lost one and then they were gone. A few bonita, but more were caught up the coast. They did very well on the yellowtail at the Island yesterday. A few boats are looking for the dorado today.

November 13th – the yellowtail are here

November 13, 2012

We had a couple great catches of dorado last week before the storm rolled through. We’ll see what the temps rebound to in a couple days. We caught a half dozen yellowtail from 9-14# this morning just minutes from the harbor. Lots of nice sierra and bonita out there. I’m sure that the Island is loading up at the moment with the cool water. We caught a nice marlin and a sail last week. The temps were up to 80 degrees and it was glass calm as far as the eye could see on Saturday. We saw the tuna a couple times. There were reports of fish to 40# caught. I saw a couple dorado that were 30# and 35#. Most were 10-20#. We’ll be looking to get some more this week. Lots of bait out there, so hopefully they hunkered down in the storm. There should be a good run of marlin still to come.

Mucho bonita and sierra

November 4, 2012

After watching the birds working bait just outside a wedding party we headed inside the bay the next morning when the point wasn’t working too good. We loaded up on sierra. Even got one little dorado on the way back. Went out in the afternoon and found a lot of bonita and sierra. Now just to get out on my own for some for the smoker. Will try offshore this week. The weather had been warm and the temps holding into the high 70’s. The fish should be out there.
