Time for the fishing to begin!

April 29, 2012

Well, I’m just over the yellowtail I guess. We caught six yesterday at the Island. Tough work, but at times we were chasing a large school in close to the rocks and we were getting a decent jig bite in the afternoon. There was a ton of bait around. I swear that we saw a few marlin jumping farther out and maybe some small foot long dorado in close. The wind is down, in the right direction, and the dorado and marlin should come in this week. I hope that we find some tuna out there!

April 22nd – Things are heating up!

April 22, 2012

Some nice warm water is coming in. I didn’t hear back from the one boat who was headed south in the morning and in 72 degree water. The day before they reported a lot of marlin spotted. One sail was seen on the way in. The dorado should be here today. Tuna? We had a jigging competition yesterday and were begging for mercy. I had to jump into 68 degree water to cool off. My friend Tim and I had ten fish each with a lot of pulled hooks and bites. The fishing was off the hook at times. Second went to one angler with thirteen and first fifteen. We had excellent fishing for calicos on Tuesday with fish to 6#. Arturo caught one that was 11# on Thursday. We hit the bass lake for nearly a hundred fish a day to 5#. Sounds like they were getting fish to 11# farther up the lake. Fast fishing up shallow with crank baits. Tons of fun. Jumped in to cool off the last day and the water seemed a perfect 77-78. I love Spring!

April 13th update

April 13, 2012

We saw the marlin but couldn’t get them to bite. Supposedly my friends had one or two on the day before. Lots of life out there. The wind came up the next day and cooled things off though. There were some huge tuna being caught on the other side. The yellowtail have been finicky and possibly spawning. One boat cleaned up with 13 to 39#, but for the most part they’ve been tough and absent out front. Tons of nice calico bass out there. I think the inshore is waiting for some warmer water. Hopefully the winds will start to die down here and let things warm up.

April 1st

The warmwater fish are on their way. All sorts of reports coming in from Baja, and we might see some cow tuna this year. Looks like the wind is going to set things back again here. We had good yellowtail fishing in the afternoons the last couple of days. We’ll see how long the pattern holds.
