We ran out yesterday and stopped right after seeing our first and only jumper of the day. Tried the reef and quickly lost interest. A couple hours later as we were discussing poor reports and the slow fishing, a nice big fin popped up behind the bait. As I was waiting for the attack, another fish came in on the big short petrolero. The fish took my bait but only stayed on for a second, about as long as the other three hits. Had another sail come in two more times on the petrolero. I was later dropping a bait back after just changing it, when my line started coming off a little faster. I set the hook and a nice sail took a couple nice jumps before throwing the hook. Never saw a dorado. Sails have been spotted at 3 and 8 mi. The other boat out did find some 25 pound tuna 35mi. out on a 160. Will be keeping an eye out for a tropical disturbance that may come our way. We need the water to cool off to bring the fish up, or back. Had some great hamachi (yellowtail) at the Wine Bar. Still, the pangueros ice chest looked a little slimmer with only a few yellowtail and maybe ten snapper. Sounds like up to seventy boats are coming for the September Corona tournament. Hopefully around 15 boats will arrive for the Labor Day tournament. I think that things should get pretty exciting!

8-28 report
August 28, 2009Update – August, 25th, 2009
August 26, 2009Well, not much happening as evidenced by the lack of fishing reports. I have one bag of fish left in the freezer. I am headed out tomorrow, so maybe I’ll have another report coming. A few big ones have been caught that I have heard of – a 500# Black and 360# Blue. One other big fish was lost after a hook pulled. A few sails are coming in along with very few dorado. Some reports from around Tortuga has shown improved action. Still reports of longline boats bringing in tons of dorado. Hopefully we can put a stop to it in the next few years before it is too late. I’ve heard that 56 boats are registered for the Corona Tournament Sept. 19th and 20th. The Labor Day Tournament is not too far off.
Still only have had three decent rains for the summer. Things are pretty dry right now on the coast and the temperatures are not bad at all. I always thought that August and September were hot. This year is proving to be different. Water is still hovering around 89 degrees though, so the fish may be down deep. The tropical storms down south are forming a little better, but still are not swinging up north.
On a positive note, there are lots of small dorado and sierras in close. They can be fun on light tackle. We went out the other day to catch five 4-5# dorado and nine 3-8# sierras in a few hours. All the fish were caught inside the point and between Window Rock. We went snorkeling at Window Rock which was excellent. There was a nice school of several hundred ballyhoo. Now, just how to catch them? I think I’ll be rigging up some of the mackerel for the big marlin this fall!
