Some small dorado and marlin out there. Great weather. Probably got up to 78 on the shoreline yesterday.

Light northwest winds are holding the fish back. The water has been warming up. We just need a few days of south winds, but that isn’t coming for a few days. Not too many good reports and not many boats at all going out. Maybe the yellowtail are in the spawn at the moment. Will try to figure something out tomorrow.

Great spring bite

We always seem to hit that spring bite where the fish are huge and you can fill the box. The pangas were filling the boat with live bait. Some good cabrilla showing up. The marlin are close!

Almost there ….

The southern winds are up daily, but the wind is keeping it cloudy and cool. There should be a lot of marlin stacked up just outside. We will check it out tomorrow. One was caught 26 miles out. We scratched out three yellowtail today, but the bait is still thicker than I’ve ever seen it. We had twelve anglers in the Ironman tournament, and only fifteen fish were caught. They did have a pretty good day the day before though. Lots of trips, but nothing too special. A few sierras, almost had a bonita, a few pargos, and some decent calicos. We did get one whopping 18# cabrilla though. I’ve only caught one other one that big. Another front, so it will be another week for the dorado at least. A lot of wahoo and tuna showing up far to the south.

Had a busy Semana Santa week with people wanting to fish. The bottomfishing was epic on Wednesday with multiple calicos within seconds, only to be off and on the rest of the week. For the most part they did pretty good. The current just got too strong at times. One friend got a 56# grouper. Sounded like the pangas eliminated multiple tons of spawning fish. The yellowtail seem like they might be getting ready as they had lockjaw yesterday. A lot of big ones on the surface chasing ballyhoo. On Friday we got a nice catch of eight. The Island is doing better, but the fish are still focused on small bait. Lots of whales out the other day, caught our first Sierra, have seen a few hammerheads, and then we passed a marlin 1.5 out. It kicked in to our squid, but that was it. Maybe it ran into my other lines with deep divers. Saw a flying fish a half mile out too. Not too far off if this wind let’s up!

March 25th

Saw the first dorado of the year the other day, but the water is still pretty cool. All we need are some more good south winds though. I think we’re only a month away. The yellowtail fishing is picking up, as well as with the cabrilla and calicos. Some nice big yellowtail biting if you can keep them on.

Yellowtail Tournament

I had to make a tough call on the weather on day 2 and cancel. Right when I made the call we hooked up and went on to go 6 for 12 in an hour. The weather mellowed out and was fishable for most of the day. The first day we were skunked. Flying Low won with seven fish at 111# on day one. Biggest was 24.2#. A lot of fish out front but they are focused on small bait. Tons of wind lately and haven’t been able to make it out. Should get good here as the moon wanes.

Big bountiful tails

The guys have been slaying huge yellowtail at the Island the last couple of days in perfect weather. Of course I had to make up office days. Yellowtail Tournament is this weekend. Kicked butt in Costa Rica against 11 other teams. 42 sails, a 200# blue, and five dorado. Hit some nice roosters the last day. What a place!

I heard of one guy going one for seven at the Island. The one he caught was 30#, so I guess they were some big fish. Not many venturing out there. We have had some incredible days in close and a lot of days with a handful of yellowtail. Have been doing well jigging, but catching them trolling too. Nothing too exciting, but we are eating well. Off to Costa Rica this week for a tournament to tease myself a bit with the warmer weather.

Jan. 11th – still out front

Another big blow has moved in, but we still might be trying out front. We caught ten 5-11# fish yesterday in about an hour. Only heard of one boat going to the Island. The wind has been up daily it seems.
